1 Cut the garlic in half and rub the cut side around the inside of a wide shallow oven proof tray and then butter the tray. After, blend the cream and milk in a jug.
2 Cover the base of the dish with a layer of potatoes. Dot a little butter over the potato layer and season with salt and pepper and then pour over a little of the cream and milk mixture.
3 Continue making layers until all the ingredients have been used up, ending with a layer of cream.
3 Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or more. If the dish browns too quickly and seems to drying out then cover with a lid or with a piece of foil. The potatoes are ready to eat when they are very soft and the top is golden brown.

I have yet made “Dauphinoise Potatoes”, it looks so much better and delicious than potato puree or mashed potato. My parents-in-law are a huge fan of potatoes, but from simple salted water-poached potatoes, stir-fried potatoes, to potato pancakes. I don’t know what to cook for them whenever they visit us…..
p.s. You can get yellow split peas in most Asian stores.

I don’t cook with butter or cream a lot, but I realized lately that I add cheese to 85% of my dishes. I love a good potato gratin – yummy.
